Following his high-school graduation, performed his (1980) civil service in the retirement home of the Workers’ Welfare Association. Then studied economics. After his basic courses in Bonn, he was attracted by the pleasant, college-town ambience and almost Mediterranean summer climate of Tübingen.
Following his master's degree there in 1987, he remained at the university and worked with Professor Joachim Starbatty on a research project about the EC's technology policy.
In 1992 he earned his doctorate with a thesis on the European experiment of using large sums of money to balance differences in prosperity within the EC. Internship at the "Stuttgarter Zeitung", a daily.

Vlek Dr. Paul Vlek is managing director of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn. With a scientific education in tropical soil science, which he had received in the Netherlands and the US, he heads the research concerning sustainable use of natural resources in the tropics and investigates effects and interactions related to the development process. The ZEF sponsors about 150 doctoral candidates with a wide range of scientific qualifications who are conducting research and development projects in every part of the tropics. Prior to his appointment at the ZEF, Professor Vlek was Chairman of Tropical Agriculture at the University of Göttingen and, before that, Charter Director of the International Research Center for Soil Fertility in Togo, West Africa. With his nearly 200 scientific publications, Professor Vlek is a world-renowned expert, and he also sits on several influential committees and supervisory boards in Germany and abroad. |
