Laurent Sedogo

Dr. Laurent Sedogo

Member of the board and executive director

Dr. Laurent Sedogo graduated with a PhD on the use of Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing (GIS / RS) in sustainable management of natural resources from ITC in Enschede and Wageningen University, The Netherlands. In particular, Dr. Sedogo worked on how to link “Hard and Soft Systems methodologies” as a mean to integrate traditional knowledge, perceptions and views of the local farmers in formal land use planning models using GIS and Remote Sensing. He is author and co-author of publications on Geo-information Science and Participatory GIS. He worked intensively in the rural development sector, especially with institutions dealing with land degradation and desertification control at the national level in Burkina Faso and the Sahel region (CILSS).

Dr. Sedogo held a variety of political offices with the position of Minister of Farmers’ Cooperatives, Minister of the Environment and Quality of Life and Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fishery. He was Vice President of the Governing Council of UNEP and Member of the Steering Committee the OSS (Sahara and Sahel Observatory) and is a Co-founder and member of the Centre of the Initiative for Sustainable Development in Burkina Faso. He was a Member of Parliament in Burkina Faso, and the Pan African Parliament before joining the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) as Executive Director in January 2014.

Since April 2017, Dr. Sedogo is dedicating his full time, energy and knowledge to the Dreyer Foundation as the new Executive Director. In particular, by sharing the ambition, vision and goals of Mr Dreyer, he is striving to build a strong cooperative system for paddy rice producers in the Dano area and beyond, as a mean to eradicate poverty for the rural population and to foster sustainable development. Since January 2018 Dr. Sedogo is also Member of the Board of the Dreyer Foundation.

Vision, Mission and Strategic Objectives of Dr. Sedogo for the Dreyer Foundation

Vision
Stemming from, and in accordance with the global vision of the Dreyer Foundation, the Executive Director, Dr. Laurent Sedogo and his team have set a Strategic Vision and a Plan to be achieved by 2025 for the Foundation: To be a steering engine for a qualitative transformation of economy and improvement of the livelihood of the population in the Dano area and beyond, particularly the rural producers, by promoting a strong cooperative movement practicing a modern agriculture based on rice farming and having access to a profitable market.

Subsequent mission:
To build an independent cooperative system, fully owned and democratically controlled by the rural producers, able to generate and redistribute enough benefits from the rice they produce, transform and sell, so that the majority of the rice farmers move out of the poverty zone.

Strategic Priorities

The implementation of such vision and mission call upon the definition of the following strategic priorities for the Dreyer Foundation:

  • Strengthening the capacity of the Dreyer Foundation by putting in place an efficient organization and management, with highly qualified staff and valuing their expertise.
  • Promoting and scaling up innovative technologies and actions in the domains of renewable energies, the modernization of agriculture and sustainable management of the environment.
  • Designing and implementing a solid framework for the construction of the cooperative movement in the Dano area, by continuously training the farmers and strengthening the capacity of their leaders to be able to establish and maintain a fair and transparent governance and management of the cooperatives, including the capacity of their apex organization to run the rice factory as a profitable business.
  • Contributing to the formalization and consolidation of the value chain of rice farming in the region, and creating the conditions for transferring the full control of the different segments to the farmers through their umbrella cooperative.
  • Open the Dreyer Foundation to other sources of funding in order to increase its’ capacity of intervention.
  • Thoroughly implementing regular participatory pathway analysis to insure real positive impacts of our intervention on the ground and their conformity with the targets and goals of the Governing Board of the Dreyer Foundation.
